What happens when lightning strikes the ocean

• Electrical Dissipation: 

  When lightning strikes the ocean, the electrical current spreads out over the water's uniquely polarized surface, which acts as a capacitor always containing the content of a volume of water with a capacitive conductor spreading the charge over the constantly closely connected highly conductive salt water surface which indicates that the volume of aqueous salt water  then has a higher charge than the lightening bolt connecting the charged salt water coming out of the cloud now contained in the discharge of salt converted to light through conduction

• Electric current always flows in the direction of least resistance along the magnetically available pathway to the capacitor with the greatest capacity until the capacitor reaches its discharge level and sends the organized electrons along on their merry way which one can see in the so called Lichtenberg patterns or in the Wadi of Egypt as the proton structure contracts and creates some form of electro magnetic event that is detectable

• In a cloud-to-ground lightning flash over the ocean, both downward-moving leaders from the cloud and upward-moving leaders from the ocean surface are involved in the process. The two meet somewhere in between to complete the circuit. The bright, visible flash of lightning is the "return stroke" that travels from the surface back up to the cloud after the connection is made.

  • Step 3: Connection and the return stroke When one of the downward leader's branches connects with an upward streamer, a complete conductive path is formed. The powerful and rapid discharge of electricity that we see as the bright lightning flash—the return stroke—then surges from the surface as protons rush  back up toward the cloud through this channel to neutralize the charge and produce water.

  Can lightning start from the ocean?
  "upward lightning" can  be initiated by the ground or a tall object on it, rather than the cloud. This is usually triggered by a rapid change in the electric field aloft. Because the ocean's surface is flat and has no tall, protruding objects, upward-initiated lightning flashes from the ocean are extremely rare.
