Was there use of the somthing similar to 'communion' in the Egyptian temple rituals?
Yes, ancient Egyptian temple rituals included a practice that bears a striking structural and philosophical resemblance to Christian communion: the Reversion of Offerings (known in ancient Egyptian as w局部-ra or wedjeb-khaut).
While it was not identical to the Christian Eucharist in terms of theology (such as transubstantiation into a savior's physical blood and body), it served as a ritual meal where humans spiritually "communed" with the divine by consuming food that had been infused with the essence of a god.
How the "Egyptian Communion" Worked
- Feeding the God: Three times a day, priests purified themselves and presented massive, luxurious banquets of bread, meat, fruit, beer, and wine directly before the cult statue of the god inside the temple's inner sanctuary. [1, 2]
- Spiritual Consumption: The Egyptians believed the god did not eat the physical matter. Instead, the deity's Ka (spiritual life force) absorbed the spiritual essence or "energy" (ka) of the food, leaving the physical substance intact. [1, 2, 3]
- The Reversion (Wedjeb-Khaut): Once the god was satisfied, the high priest recited a specific magical formula. This formula legally and spiritually "reverted" the food away from the divine realm back to the human realm. [1, 2]
- Eating the Blessing: The food was then distributed to the priests, temple staff, and their families to be eaten. Because the food had been physically touched or occupied by the god's presence, eating it meant partaking in the god’s divine blessings, health, and life force. [1, 2, 3]
A common connection between communion to the Khoiak Festival, where Egyptians crafted hollow "corn mummies" or cakes shaped like the god Osiris. They filled these cakes with soil and grain seeds, watering them until they sprouted to symbolize Osiris rising from the dead
